Forging out a moment of reprieve in a hectic world by taking a deep breath and looking up to the sky. That’s the experience I try to recreate with my paintings. Treading a wobbly line somewhere between abstraction and realism, my work taps into the familiarity, comfort and beauty of the natural world, whilst nudging at the edginess of abstraction. The paintings hint at images of sky, leaves, and branches, however blurred shapes, vibrant colours and complex layering take them beyond the representational.
I work in oil for the rich, velvety, seductive quality of the paint. I appreciate how natural the process is, as the paint I use is crafted locally, and composed simply of walnut or linseed oil and pure pigment. I work with vibrant hues to evoke visceral feelings from the viewer and to encourage a sort of pause; a moment of reprieve, like taking a deep breath, and looking up to the sky.
